Chicago/Turabian Citation Guide (17th Edition): Author-Date or Notes-Bibliography?

Should I Use Author-Date or Notes-Bibliography?

Chicago/Turabian has two different ways of citing sources: the Author-Date system and the Notes-Bibliography system. Check with your teacher to see which they prefer. For more information on how to use each, click on the links below.

Author-Date (uses in-text citation)

The Author-Date system is used in the sciences and social sciences. Here, you cite your sources briefly in parentheses using the author’s last name and the year of publication. Each in-text citation is listed more fully in your reference list at the end.

Notes-Bibliography (uses footnotes)

The Notes-Bibliography system is used more often in subjects like literature, history, and the arts. In this system, you cite your sources using numbered footnotes and endnotes. Each of these has a superscript number in the text. You also list your sources in a separate bibliography.
