MYP Personal Project 2019-2020

A guide to help students with their MYP Personal Projects.

Why complete a Personal Project?

The aim of the MYP Personal Project is to encourage and enable students to:

  • participate in a sustained, self directed inquiry within a global context
  • generate creative new insights and develop deeper understandings through in-depth investigation
  • demonstrate skills, attitudes and knowledge required to complete a project over an extended period of time
  • communicate effectively in a variety of situations
  • demonstrate responsible action through, or as a result of, learning
  • appreciate the process of learning and take pride in your accomplishments

What's involved?

The inquiry process in MYP projects involves a wide range of activities that extend knowledge and understanding and develops skills and attitudes.

The Personal Project involves:

  • deciding what you want to learn about
  • identifying your prior knowledge
  • discovering what you will need to know to complete the project
  • creating proposals or criteria for your project
  • planning your time and materials
  • recording developments of the project
  • making decisions
  • developing understanding and solving problems,
  • communicating with your supervisor and others
  • creating a product or developing an outcome
  • evaluating the product/outcome and reflecting on your project and your learning.

Choosing a personal project

You may consider the following questions as you choose a global context exploration to provide focus for your project.

1. What do I want to achieve through my personal project?

2. What do I want others to understand through my work?

3. What impact do I want my project to have?

4. How can a specific exploration give greater purpose to my project?

Assessment

The Personal Project is assessed using four criteria. Each criterion has 8 levels.

  • Criterion A: Investigating
  • Criterion B: Planning
  • Criterion C: Taking action
  • Criterion D: Reflecting

You need to choose a topic to research that will help you to achieve a goal by creating a product. Choosing a global context exploration will help you to focus your project.

You need to record all your thoughts, reflections, processes, planning, decisions, communications and more in a process journal.

This journal will provide you with the content to write your report at the end of the project. It must be comprehensive and annotated.

You will create a product or an outcome that best achieves your goal.

You will submit a report meeting the assessment criteria and accepted structure.

What do I submit?

1. Report: including appendices (maximum of 10 - one page extracts from your Process Journal)  The Process Journal is indirectly assessed through the extracts.

2. Bibliography for your entire process and Works cited for anything directly referenced in your report

3. Product or outcome include the product or up to 5 still images or 30 seconds of video of the product

4. Academic Honesty form

5. Process Journal for Presentation Evening (not assessed)
